Urgent Appointments

If you have an urgent  problem you will be seen on the day you request an appointment. The practice does specialise in providing an acute access system called the same day access where doctors and nurses work together to provide a high quality patient-centred service.

If your condition is non-urgent you also have the option to book up to 4 weeks in advance. Nurses based in our practice treat patients for a wide range of common conditions. 

We do provide some flexibility in our appointment system. If you find it difficult to get to surgery during our normal working hours please discuss this with our receptionist or practice manager

Contraceptive Services

baby_and_pregnant_mumFull family planning services are provided including coil insertions and hormonal implants.

Cervical Smears
Please make appointment at reception following receipt of your screening letter.

Heart Disease Prevention - CVD Screening
We review risk factors for heart disease in all patients and offer appropriate lifestyle advice or management.In addition we offer a screening service for patients between the ages of 40 and 70 - the NHS HEALTH CHECK.


Child_immunisationChild Health & Immunisation
All new babies are invited for regular check-ups from six weeks old.Childhood vaccinations are provided at the weekly Child Vaccination Clinic every Wednesday from 9.15 am.An alternative date can be arranged if this is unsuitable through reception

Minor Surgery
Minor operations can be done in our treatment room. Please discuss this with your doctor who will then arrange for you to be given an appointment.  

Diabetes
We see patients with diabetes throughout the week by appointment.

If you have diabetes your care will be managed at the surgery by our nurses and doctors who have specialist knowledge in diabetes care.

Primary Mental Health Care
The Primary Care Mental Health Team provides services from the building for patients with a range of mental health problems. Your doctor will decide if you benefit from this service.This includes the IAPTS service, Alcohol outreach service, visiting consultant clinic and depot service.

Physiotherapyphysio
The practice provides an acute access physiotherapy service in our fully equipped physiotherapy suite where advice and treatment can be obtained for acute conditions, please note that where longer term treatments are required we will need to refer you to the community based service at Spencer House. Private physiotherapy services are available at the practice-please discuss this requirement with your doctor.

Visiting Consultants
The practice has visiting consultants in PSYCHIATRY allowing you to obtain secondary care services in the convenience of your own surgery.There is now a COMMUNITY ULTRASOUND service operating from the building to which your doctor may refer you.

Medical Examinations
Medical examinations can be carried out for insurance, driving license and employment. These medicals carry a fee, please ask at reception for details.

Specialist Nursing Service                                                           

At Birchwood Medical Centre we now provide a specialist nursing service for patients with a cancer or life limiting diagnosis.             Sister Ruth Nobes has 10 years post registration experience in palliative care.  She has undertaken the Macmillan Cancer Champion course to offer support to patients and relatives through initial diagnosis, treatment and palliative care.
